More Bad Mom Points

Now that our lives have settled down after the whole spider incident, I can update you on some shop talk.

Shop Talk: I submitted another story to my critique group this weekend. It's geared for younger readers and I was having a hard time getting the word count down. Many magazines have a word limit of 500 words for their younger audiences. My story is at 635 words. That's a lot of words to cut out! Finding a market for anything longer than 500 words is tough! I've done a bunch of market research and come up with only one or two options and they aren't good options. But, the wonderful ladies in my CG have made fantastic suggestions for cutting words without losing the story! I'm excited to revise it and recheck the market guide for the perfect place to send it! It'll have to wait though. I need to get to work on Assignment 8! It's all in my head - I just need to get it on paper! It also requires some market research, which can be daunting. Still waiting to hear about the two manuscripts out in Slush Pile land...

Today is library, lunch, and recess duty for me. It was raining this morning so I sent Becky to school without snow clothes or boots thinking they'd have indoor recess. I told her I wouldn't be there for recess because there's really no point when it's inside. Turns out the rain turned to snow and the kids went outside after all. I got there right before lunch and was met in the hallway by Rebecca's friend who told me Becky had fallen down outside. I went to her classroom to find her soaking wet and crying. Not good. Her teacher was glad to see me and we decided I'd bring Becky home to change. She ate lunch at home and then I brought her back to school. I'm telling you, I'm not going win any mom of the year awards with my record lately LOL!!! I probably shouldn't mention how I shot the poor kid in the eye with a Nerf foamy thing this weekend... I'm telling you...

Goliath

We're all still here thanks to the heroism of my husband! I'll get to that in a minute. First I need to confess the awful thing I did to Katie. Becky, Allie, and I pretty much ignored the fact that the giant monstrosity of a spider was blocking the basement door until Katie got home... I wanted to know if it was still there. So without telling Katie about the spider I asked her to open the basement door and look at the top step. I know - awful, right? Keep reading. She peeked in and said she didn't see anything. I asked her to move the mop. She did and proceeded to COME COMPLETELY UNGLUED! She screamed and danced her way around the kitchen like a crazy person while I about peed my pants from laughing so hard!! I know - awful. I couldn't help it. My fear of this spider clouded my otherwise good judgement. I admit I was relieved that he hadn't moved. We continued to ignore him in hopes that Ed would save us when he got home. Then my dad called after reading the post about the humungo spider. I'm sure that deep down it was parental concern that made him call, not the desire for a good laugh at my expense!! Anyway, while my parents were on the phone I bravely snapped a couple of pictures of Goliath (that's what I'll call him from now on). After repeatedly disturbing him, Goliath still didn't move. I was convinced he was dead. Phew! NOT TRUE! It was all part of Goliath's sneak attack plans! He was merely playing dead! When Ed got home he looked on the step for the spider and he was GONE!!! Goliath was crawling down the wall, undoubtedly going to gather his spider friends to help in the takeover of our home! Fortunately Ed bravely grabbed a 2 X 4 (I'm not kidding) and whacked Goliath into oblivion! I'm sorry for the graphic photo of Goliath after he was squished. I may blow it up and hang it downstairs as a warning to all the other spiders of what will happen to them if they start getting any crazy ideas again!

I know he doesn't look very big in this photo but if you could blow it up you'd see that the flash actually produced red eye!!! Only ginormous spiders get red eye when you take their picture people!

Goliath after his demise... Notice the 2 x4 Ed is balancing him on. LOL!

Farewell?

This may be the last time I post - ever. You see there's a giant spider living in my basement - a tarantula maybe - and if he finds his way into my kitchen from the basement stairs he'll kill us all, I know it. It's true. I saw him with my arachnophobic eyes! I shampooed the rug in the family room this morning and was bringing the shampooer back down to the basement. On my way back up the stairs I saw him. He was on the top step blocking my way, and daring me to challenge him. For a split second I considered stepping over him to safety. But fear took hold and I started running back down the stairs, screaming - yes, screaming my fool head off! I got to the bottom of the stairs and called to Becky to come help me! I know, pathetic. She peeked over the edge of the stairs and saw him. Then she ran away, leaving me alone in the basement! Now, if I wasn't wearing my goofy red pj's I would've gone out the basement door and around to the front door. But there were worker people next door and no way were they going to see me running through my yard with my goofy red jammies on. So, I started calling for Becky to throw me down some clothes. She wouldn't throw them down. Instead she ran around the house in her jammies to the back door with my clothes. I got changed and made it safely back onto the main floor of our house. However, the spider is still at large and quite possibly making his plans for our annihilation! Alright, maybe it wasn't the size of a tarantula but he was ginormous!

Cujo

I have some good shop talk news but I wanted to share this story about Lucy/Cujo. Some of you may not know that Lucy has displayed aggressiveness toward other dogs. She gets pretty ferocious. She even attacked my parents' very passive, super sweet lab mix named Charlie. Yesterday, Katie was outside with Lucy. Lucy was tied to the porch railing with several jump ropes, which was fine because all she does is lay around. I was sitting inside on the couch watching out the window. I looked up and noticed our neighbor's little Pappillion walking over to Lucy!!! I shot off the couch and headed for the door. My worst thoughts were of this poor little dog being grabbed like a chew toy and shaken back and forth by my crazy dog! As I was opening the door I briefly noticed Lucy being very accepting of Ginger. She stayed laying down, her ears were relaxed, and even her tail thumped. As soon as I opened the door some sort of switch went on and Lucy's demeanor did a 180! She growled and hopped to her feet. Fortunately Ginger caught on and began to RUN! Unfortunately, the jump ropes did not keep Lucy from chasing Ginger. She took off after that little dog as fast as her flabby old body would let her! Katie and I were hollering at Lucy to stop but she didn't pay any attention. Then, the switch went off and she literally stopped in the middle of the road and lost interest in catching the little dog. She walked right back over to Katie. Ginger's boy, Caleb came out to get her. He didn't even know she'd gotten out of the house. Imagine his surprise when he saw his dog being chased up the middle of the road by Lucy! Anyway, our theory is that Lucy is very possessive of us, her family, when other dogs are around. She is the sweetest, most loving dog on the planet but she WILL NOT share her family with any other dog! It frustrates me but what can I do? When she's on her leash I make her sit and look at my face when other dogs pass by and she does okay. But if she's loose, watch out pups! So now we're calling her Cujo. I still love her to pieces.

Shop Talk: I got an e-mail this morning from Stories For Children Magazine. My article about Lucy has passed phase one of the submission process!! The assistant editor said that the article "gave her goosebumps and brought tears to her eyes." She wants me to send a picture of Lucy. YAY! Now I have to wait some more. It could be six weeks before I hear if the editor accepts the article. I'm hesitantly excited - but excited none the less.

Stuck in a Decade

How does a person get stuck in a decade? You've seen them. When that decade arrives do they feel some sort of oneness with it and therefore can't move forward? What did they do before their decade arrived? Were they able to move forward then? You know what I mean? Last night on the Food Network a waitress had BIG bangs, curled, with LOTS of hairspray. Her permed hair was pulled back into a ponytail. Her jeans were tight, her glasses were big, and if I could've seen her feet she was probably wearing white reebok high tops - with her jeans rolled in that goofy way we all did! Her decade - 1980's. The problem - she had to be 40. How about the man at the bank - an older man - with brown polyester pants, a plaid shirt to match with button down pockets on the front, and big glasses. He may have the comb over hairdo and he looks like the guy from All in the Family. His decade - 1970's. The problem - he's in his 50's. So, what is it. Do these folks just hate shopping so much that they don't have more up to date clothes? Are they afraid of letting someone change their hair style? Someone should do a survey or something and find out why they're stuck. Interesting stuff I tell ya.

I scored big time bad mom of the year points yesterday. In the morning Becky complained of a stomach ache. Knowing Becky I thought it had something to do with going to school so I insisted she go. I told her to go to the nurse if she continued to feel bad. Off she went. I started to worry about her so I e-mailed her teacher to check on her and she said Beck was doing fine. Good. When I picked her up at the bus stop she didn't look fine. Her eyes were a little glassy, her cheeks a little flush, and her forehead warm. Yup, I sent my child to school sick. Not only did I send her - I MADE her go. How awful is that?! She's not running a fever this morning but I'm keeping her home anyway, maybe just to make up for sending her yesterday when she didn't feel good.

Happy Tuesday.

Happy Easter and More Shop Talk

Shop Talk: I'm sitting here with my next manuscript bundled up and ready to mail out. This one is Nick's story. It's entitled "The Small Voice" and is basically about Nick's struggle to do the right thing after making a bad choice. It'll be going to Pockets magazine. This is the story that I revised for my course assignment. My teacher had suggested it needed to be 'awfulized'. Her comments on the revision were very positive, however, she felt that perhaps the slingshot that Nick uses to shoot his neighbor's cat was a bit too awful. Go figure. So, I toned that down a bit and made a few changes based on other comments and got it ready to go. Pockets magazine, by the way, is absolutely wonderful. Check them out online. I would be so pleased to have my story appear in their magazine! It's true what I've read about sending out a manuscript; I feel like I'm sending off a piece of myself, something that's important to me, something I've spent a lot of time creating. It's a bit nerve racking! Feel free to send up any prayers for an acceptance for me! That'll be two manuscripts out there in slush pile land! Let's hope one (OR BOTH) of them make it 'Out of the Slush Pile.' I have to submit something to my Critique Group next weekend. I've got a story that I wrote for younger readers that I need to polish up a bit. After reviewing the groups comments and making any changes I may be able to send that out somewhere. I'll need to do some market research and figure out if I need to tailor the story to a specific magazine. I'll keep you posted.

Becky and I went to see the play, Addy: An American Girl Adventure this afternoon. It was awesome! Addy is a slave girl whose family is ripped apart in the struggle for freedom. It chronicles her trials and her joys as she makes the change from being a slave to being free. She is strong, brave, and determined. The play captured the essence of the book series perfectly and perhaps better in some ways since it was happening in front of us with the emotion right there to see. Becky already read the entire series and she loved it. It was nice for Becky and I to have an afternoon together where we didn't have to share each other with anyone else! The middle child certainly doesn't get much of that! Neither does the mom! It was a lot of fun.

Happy Easter everyone. I hope you'll take time to celebrate our Risen Savior. He conquered death so that we can live eternally if we only acknowledge our sinfulness, ask His forgiveness, and admit that He alone is able to save us. No works we do will get us to Heaven, just faith. "He arose. He arose. Alleluia, Christ arose."

My E-mail Submission

Shop Talk: I'm about to hyperventilate. I just e-mailed my article to Stories For Children magazine! I was so nervous to hit the send button. I wanted to make sure I formatted everything correctly and included all the right things. Their submission guidelines clearly state that if you don't format correctly, or exceed the word count, or don't include the right things they will disregard your submission. After all the work I've done to prepare the ms for submission having it rejected on a technicality would be awful! I spent some time yesterday going over my bibliography and adding some side bar facts to the piece. Ed read it over last night and commented on how much it's changed/improved since I first wrote it. Katie liked the changes I made as well. I know you're wondering what the article is about. Alright, I'll tell you. It's about Lucy and how Hurricane Katrina changed her life and the lives of many pets. The magazine is doing an Animal Shelter feature in August so I submitted the article with that slant in mind. I'm hoping the fact that Katrina's third anniversary being August 29 will help too. We'll see. It takes weeks to find out if they'll want it or not. I admit I liked the e-mail submission process better than mailing it out. This particular magazine only accepts e-mail subs. I hope that one day really soon I'll be able to tell you where to find my published article!

A Successful Day

It may only be 3:30 in the afternoon, but already I feel like I've accomplished much and would call this day a productive one. Mondays are typically busy since I spend the morning at Becky's school volunteering. I do alot of back and forth driving too! This afternoon I had an errand to run and needed to get the house in shape for Bible study tonight. Usually I feel a bit overwhelmed by the regular stuff I have to do as well as the extra I do for our meeting. For some reason today I didn't feel that way. I somehow got my errand done, dusted and vacuumed, and even got on the treadmill for a half hour. YAY! Now I just have to make dinner which is an easy casserole. Success I say!!

Shop Talk: I've gotten my first batch of manuscripts to critique from my CG (Critique Group). Once again I am so encouraged by this group. They are so talented and insightful. It is truly inspiring to work with them! I find it difficult to offer suggestions to these ladies. I think I'm the least experienced writer in the group!! What business do I have telling, eh-hem, suggesting, to them what to change, add, delete, etc.? I hope I'm as encouraging to them as they have been to me!
Another part of my success today is that I began writing my early chapter book. I hope to be able to share more about it as it evolves. I'm trying the 'just sit and type' approach. I'll edit/revise later. So far I like where it's going. I hesitate to even tell you my protagonist's name. If I do, she'll be real. She'll be out there for your criticism and judgement. I don't think I'm ready to let you all into my writing world quite that much. I'm certainly not confident enough in my writing ability. Soon, I hope. So, bear with me. I'll fill you in as soon as I'm ready. Maybe after chapter one is written. I want to submit it to my CG at that point.

Time to start dinner and keep things on track so that when I lay my weary head on my pillow I can fall asleep knowing I accomplished much today. :)

Goody Bags at the Mall????

Here's a theory I have: Every Friday and Saturday night after, let's say, 4 p.m., there must be someone stationed at every entrance of our local mall handing out black clothes, black eyeliner, and black hair dye. Like a goody bag for coming to the mall without any adult supervision. The goody bag hander outer must say something like, "Nice to see you. Glad you're here. No grownups here tonight. Feel free to use bad language, run through the mall like a toddler, start a fight in the middle of the walkway, and generally act like an idiot. Oh, and put all this black stuff on so you look reeeeaaalll pretty." Apparently you are only handed a goody bag if you are between the ages of 12 and 17. Hmph, I feel soooo left out. Okay, so this is a pet peeve of mine. Why do parents drop their CHILDREN off at the mall and leave them there with all the other CHILDREN while they go who knows where? The wrongness of doing that should be abundantly clear when said parent pulls up to the mall entrance where at least 50 CHILDREN dressed in black with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths are congregating. It's impossible to miss them! I don't get it. Some malls have rules about having an adult chaperone with you if you are under 18 on a Fri. or Sat. night. I'm thinking that parents should be the ones chaperoning their kids instead of counting on a bunch of under paid, probably under trained, mall security people to babysitt their CHILDREN for them. What a concept.

Ed is ditching us today to head to a Bruins/Flyers game in Boston. I think we are going to paint some pottery and them maybe hit the movie theater. Not sure what we'll see. That's always a bit of a challenge with a teenager, a third grader, and a preschooler.

Guess I should shower and have some breakfast. Happy Weekend.

Hysterical Blog

If you have not been to the In The Motherhood blog yet, you HAVE to check it out! Hurry! Run! So. Funny. It's HYSTERICAL!

Allison is running a fever today. I hope it's not the beginning of the flu. The nasty, horrible, lasts FOREVER flu. So far it's just low grade with a yucky cough. That's how Ed was a couple of days ago but he's feeling better. Please, please, please, don't let anyone else get sick!

American Idol is, well, dull. Sorry. I'm still a fan, just a bored out of her stinking mind fan. And, oh yay, another week of Lennon/McCartney songs next week. I'm so looking forward to that because, aside from one or two performances, the contestants put me TO SLEEP!

LOST tonight. Still hooked. Can't help it. Not alot of answers still but that's okay. At least it's entertaining!

By the way, can you believe the blogging roll I am on! I don't know what's gotten into me posting so often! Don't get too used to it...

My Corny Poem

Shop Talk: I noticed that I haven't done any shop talk in awhile. I've taken a little break I guess. I've started to read my Assignment 8 instructions. My head is about to explode! There is so much information to process! For instance, did you know that there are at least 12 different story categories? Did you know there are at least 9 different article categories? The different categories tend to overlap and yet each one requires its own special technique. I've got to come up with three story ideas or article ideas or a combination of the two. I will outline them and /or prepare synopsis to go with them. I think there's more but I haven't read that far yet!! I have enough trouble coming up with one good idea let alone three! Although, I did want to do an article on Ghana (actually some interesting tidbit about Ghana) so I think I will go forward with that. One down, two to go! I haven't heard back from my instructor yet about assignment 7. I did submit it to my critique group and they all had wonderful suggestions and lots of encouragement! It will be interesting to compare what the group had to say about the story compared with my instructor's comments.

Now since I want to embarrass myself I'm going to attempt to write a little poem. I don't want it to be too good, however lest you all be extremely jealous of my incomprehensible talent...
Tucker

Tucker, Tucker are you ready?
I'm going to school. I can bring my teddy.
We'll play some games and sing some songs.
Don't you want to come along?
Let's get you dressed. Where's your shirt?
Oh, no. It fell in the dirt.
That's okay. You still look cute
Only wearing your birthday suit.

Corny, I know. What did you expect for a poem that came off the top of my head in less than five minutes!! LOL!

Five Years Ago...

Five years ago...
I was waiting for my baby girl to be born. I'm sure in this picture I'm on the phone checking on my girls to make sure they are all set as they wait for the arrival of their new sister. I was so ready for Allison to be born. I remember dealing with severe sciatic pain that last few weeks.

After my contractions started around 4:30 in the afternoon things went very quick. Allison was born at 7:30 pm. 7 lbs. 15 oz. of screaming baby girl! She screamed from the moment she was born until she was snug as a bug in her mother's arms - sometimes she's still like that! I love how petrified Becky and Katie look! Can't you imagine them thinking, "She's coming home with us!?

We are pretty sure that our sweet baby girl sucked her thumb even before she was born. This picture was taken the first night. She is still a major thumb sucker!

Today Allison is a charming, sweet little girl with a tender spirit. She's inquisitive and imaginative. She loves all things girl but doesn't mind getting messy. Her sense of humor is infectious. So is her smile. She loves to cuddle. She loves music and caterpillars and books. She makes me laugh. She is my joy.

By the way, Check out Allison's ears...Yes, she got them pierced! Her birthday party was the other day at Michael's craft store. She had 10 little friends there. What a fun time we had. All of the mom's stayed so it was great to visit with everyone while our wonderful party planner, Kathy, handled the activities! Allison was a wonderful hostess and was so kind as she opened each gift. I was really proud of her. She really is growing up. Sniff. Sniff.

Happy Birthday Little Miss!

Update on Weird...

The very nice officer I spoke with this morning called me to let me know what he'd found out. The first time he called me he asked if I knew an Adam Brown - I don't. Apparently that's the guy's name who took the picture. The officer said he tried to call Adam Brown but wasn't able to reach him. He said he'd keep trying. (Normally I would leave this guy's name out of my post but...I don't think he deserves that respect.)
A little while later the officer called me again to say he'd spoken to Adam Brown. The guy claims he'd just been into Target and bought his new camera. He claims he was taking pictures of the stone wall beyond my van and I miss understood what he was doing. The officer asked me if that was true and I said, "Uh, no." The stone wall would've been to my left, behind his truck. He most definitely was NOT taking a picture of the wall. The officer then told me that he "exaggerated" a bit when he spoke to mr. weirdo and told him I was thinking of filing a restraining order against him. Hmm...good idea, I thought. Anyway, mr. weirdo seemed apologetic enough and it seems like the very nice police officer got the point across that he could get in LOTS of trouble. I asked if mr. weirdo had been in trouble before and the officer told me he had but just for disturbing the peace stuff. He assured me he would've told me if it was something more. I'm still disturbed by the whole thing but I think I feel a tiny bit better. Hopefully that's the end of that! I still say it was all just too weird.

I'm going to try to post those pictures of Allie's party again. Check out the post below to see if it works!

Good Day.

Weird...

So something really weird happened this morning. I went to Target after I brought the girls to school to finish up some birthday shopping for Allison. As I was walking to my van I noticed a pickup truck pull forward in the parking space close to my van. No problem. I kept my eye on the truck and got to my van. As I was opening my door I could see the reflection of the guy in the truck in my window - he took my picture. Weird. Very weird. I got in my van and locked the door. I kept looking at him to see if he'd look at me but his head was turned. Finally he did turn - I gave him a funny look, pulled forward and took note of his plate number. It bothered me all the way home. I called Ed and he said I should definitely call the police. So I did. The officer there was very nice and told me he was heading to Target right now to see if the truck was still there. Hopefully he'll call me and let me know if he finds anything out. This is bothering me. I feel like I put myself in a vulnerable position and I'm mad at myself for it. What could I have done differently? I'll be thinking about that.

On a lighter note...Blogger isn't letting me post some very cute pictures from Allison's birthday party yesterday. I'll try again later.

Time to go to Becky's school for library, then lunch and recess!

Summer Here We Come

We have finally secured the cabin we rented last summer on Frye Island! PHEW! We've been waiting for a month to hear if it's available the week we want to go and tonight we were told we can have it! YAY! It truly was the perfect spot with it's private, sandy beach, dock, and swim float! I can't wait to go back!

Here's a picture of the Snowman Thermometer I painted at the pottery studio. It came out pretty good! The thermometer is about 10 degrees off but I don't care...

And here's a couple of pictures of some sledding we did at a local park. The hill was so fast!

No Shop Talk today - my brain needs a break... Time to go get some little girls ready for bed. Ed is upstairs with them right now and all I can hear is Allison's giggles! He always winds them right up! That's okay, at least I got a break from getting them ready.

Happy Weekend!

Shop Talk, Dinner, and The Dentist

Shop Talk: Remember I told you my article was rejected at the magazine I submitted it to? Well, I've got another magazine in mind. It's a free online magazine so if my article is published you will all be able to read it! Anyway, I've been spending some time going over the article. I'm amazed at how my writing has progressed since I did that article as assignment 4! I was able to spot some weaknesses in the piece and tighten things up a bit. I need to do a bit more research on my topic because I'd like to include a side bar of sorts. You know, with some interesting facts related to the article. I'm excited about the possibilities! On another note, I'm already loving my new critique group! What an interesting group of women with varied backgrounds. Everyone seems ultra supportive and eager to help each other succeed. I'm truly looking forward to getting to know them more. Not to mention the inspiration that comes from shop talk with other writers!

Last night I made a yummy chicken dish that even my children loved. Try it out.

Italian Chicken

Boneless chicken breast
1 can diced tomatoes
Basil
Minced garlic
Minced onion
Sliced tomato
Sliced mozzarella

Heat oven to 325 degrees. Place chicken in casserole dish and cover with diced tomatoes. Sprinkle with basil, garlic and onions (however much you want, sorry that's how I cook)
Cook for 5o min. Top with sliced tomatoes and cheese. Let cheese melt. That's it.
Serve with whole wheat linguine noodles and your favorite vegetable and voila! Enjoy.

I went to the dentist ts morning. It was my first time at this particular dentist. I liked her a lot. The office was very nice and everyone was friendly. However, she wants to remove my wisdom teeth. I've known for several years that they need to come out. I've been avoiding it. I don't like the dentist - remember? She assured it wouldn't be a big deal - basic Novocaine, no anesthesia. I've heard TOO MANY horror stories to believe her! I made the appointment however. There is some satisfaction in knowing that I am acting responsibly but it doesn't really make me less nervous! I've got a household to run people! Children to care for! I can not be incapacitated for ANY length of time! Deeeeep Breath..... I'm sure it will be fine.
